My work explores black American culture and its connection to the mainstream while also critiquing the malicious logic of capitalism, which pervades each. Deep research has guided me to the theory that all major American issues – whether it is war, race, education, incarceration, or sexuality – derive from capitalism and are kept alive through our love to consume. I learned that greed is the only religion and money the only language. My work intends to expose this problem by utilizing symbols, colloquial street dialect (slang), familiar brand logos, pop, and political references, and use of hip hop lyrics to illustrate how manipulative capitalist strategies are in relation to societal morality. America suffers from close-mindedness and because of this, big corporations are able to control people’s perceptions and mold them into a singular way of thinking.
